How to Win at AI Engineering

After a few days of research, this is how I would make my MVP.
Here’s the stack (without auth):
Copilot front end (basic UI)

RAG
MCP
And you can do this entire thing on digital ocean for $20/month. Leveraging open source code.
This is not a deep dive. Just high level. This is just seed planting. You water it and grow your own tree.
LLM - just use an OpenAI API key. Easiest solution.
RAG
What’s a RAG? It’s middleware for a vector database. What’s a vector database? Oh, just the most mathematically fascinating thing in tech since encryption. Converting words to numbers so like words can be found. Look it up.
How do we make it? Digital ocean droplet. OpenRAG. For the DB? Opensearch (elasticsearch) in Digital Ocean. OpenRAG is the word you needed.
MCP
This is the crazy part. My jaw hit the floor when I discovered this.

This goes in its own droplet.
Now, you still need to configure it. Connect your services, etc. But 50% of the work and probably 80% of the hard part is DONE. U N R E A L.
And once you do…you just point your copilot to the MCP. Want to add another user? Trivial. I have no idea how else to explain this. It’s like someone gifts you a $100M mansion and all you have to do is decide how to furnish it.
The Copilot
Claude code. Or bolt - doesn’t matter. Make a simple UI to display your LLM output and point it to your tools.
At the end, you get:
A front end for your LLM
That looks at your RAG for relevant context to your question
And an MCP that can actually execute tasks
And yes, it’s that “simple”
Go take this. Do it. Make it happen. Grab a pack of monsters. Don’t sleep. Take the day off work. Build it. Go make history.
