Here he is in his own words:
My Journey from History Teacher to Tech Sales: A Personal Transformation
Hey there, everyone! I wanted to take a moment to share my personal journey from being a high school history teacher to diving headfirst into the world of tech sales. It’s been quite the ride, and I think it’s a story worth telling—especially for those of you who are feeling stuck, and/or are thinking a career change.
A Teacher at Heart
I was a high school history teacher, earning around $60k a year. I genuinely loved my job—there’s something incredibly rewarding watching young people blossom. However, as I approached my 40th birthday, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed to make more money. Life is expensive, and I wanted to ensure a comfortable future for myself and my family.
Discovering BowTiedCyber
That’s when I stumbled upon BowTiedCyber’s tech sales bootcamp. The program caught my attention because it wasn’t just focused on sales; it also incorporated cybersecurity—a field that’s booming right now. I figured this could be my ticket to a more lucrative career.
With my teaching job during the day, I dedicated my nights and school breaks to studying for certifications like Network+, Security+, and AZ-900. It took me about a year, but I was determined to make this work. My evenings were filled with flashcards, online courses, and many gym breaks (I don't drink coffee)!
Gaining Experience
Once I completed my certifications, I landed an internship at a SaaS startup. It was an incredible experience! I got to work with some amazing people and put my newly acquired sales skills into practice. However, the pay wasn’t exactly life-changing. Still, I soaked up all the knowledge I could. I realized I had a tendency to talk too quickly and too much, which is something I definitely needed to work on (and probably still do...).
As I approached my two-year mark at the startup, I knew it was time to look for my next opportunity. I had learned in the bootcamp that staying around two years in your first tech sales role is a good strategy, especially since you often see the real financial rewards with your second job in this industry.
The Job Hunt Begins
Now, here’s where it got a bit daunting. I wasn’t looking forward to the job application process. I figured that I needed to send out about 1,000 applications before landing an offer. Fortunately, BowTiedCyber introduced me to a fantastic tool created by someone named Cat. This AI-powered job application tool made the application process way easier, especially when it came to crafting cover letters.
The tool also provided a detailed assessment of my strengths and weaknesses as a candidate, along with tailored suggestions on where I might fit best. Over the next three months, while still working full time, I managed to send out over 350 job applications.
Hitting the Interview Circuit
I’m not going to sugarcoat it—there were a lot of rejections and even more applications that went ignored. But I also had some success! I scored seven first-round interviews and three second-round interviews. Unfortunately, the first two second-round interviews didn’t pan out, but maybe it was for the best; they were also the two lowest-paying roles.
*BOWTIEDCYBER’S NOTE*
THESE ARE UNREAL RATIOS!!! ONE INTERVIEW PER 50 APPLICATIONS IS WILD EVEN AMONG SEASONED PROS (back to the show)

However, the third second-round interview seemed promising. This is where Cat’s tool really shined. I fed it the LinkedIn profiles of my interviewers, the job description, and the company website. The AI generated practice interview questions tailored to my situation. I kept pushing the tool for harder questions, and it gave me clear, concise answers—something crucial for a sales role.
The Big Offer
After all the hard work and dedication over the past three years, I’m thrilled to say I just received an offer for a position that pays $160k a year! The team seems fantastic, and the best part? The office is only 20 minutes away from my home- yes, I hate commuting, but didn't want a fully-remote role.
I’m super excited to start this new chapter in my career. It’s a significant shift from teaching history, but I’m ready for the challenge. If you’re considering making a career change or stepping into a new field, I encourage you to take that leap. With determination, the right resources, and a bit of guidance, you can achieve your goals too!
Thanks for reading, and here’s to new beginnings!
The work we do here really is the joy of my professional career. There’s nothing like helping someone go from a job with no monetary potential to adding $100k to their take home pay. There’s just not.
And I want to help you do that too.
Book a call and come see how we can change your life too.
